Dr. Jan "Honza" Cernocky (Ing. [MS] 1993 Brno University of Technology (BUT); Dr. [PhD] 1998 Universite Paris XI and BUT) was with the Department of Radio Electronics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of BUT as assistant professor from 1997. Since February 2002, he is with the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) of BUT as Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia. He is leading the Speech processing group Speech@FIT, a 15-people research group. Speech@FIT belongs to the most progressive speech research groups in Central Europe, its quality is documented mainly by successes in NIST evaluations (meeting transcription, language and speaker recognition). Speech@FIT is advised by Prof. Hynek Hermansky, one of world's leading speech scientists.
Dr. Cernocky supervises several PhD students, of which 2 (Petr Motlicek 2003 and Lukas Burget 2004) have successfully defended their thesis. His research interests include signal processing and speech processing (very low bit rate coding, speaker verification, recognition, multi-modal aspects). He is author of more than 15 papers in professional journals and in conference proceedings. He is teaching signal and speech courses at FIT BUT.
He has been involved with European projects aiming at speech corpora creation - SPEECHDAT-E (4th FP, technical coordination) and SpeeCon and cooperated with industrial partners on similar projects. He has been active in EU-sponsored projects Multimodal meeting manager (M4, 5th FP) and Augmented Multimodal interaction (AMI, 6th FP), leading the efforts of FIT in speech recognition, keyword spotting and multimodal-data recordings and annotations. Currently, he is coordinating BUT's participation in CareTaker (6th FP Euroepan project) and in projects supported by Czech Ministries of Industry and Defense.
Dr. Cernocky has served as reviewer for conferences and journals, including IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. He is on the scientific board of FIT, scientific board of Text-Speech-Dialogue conference, editorial board of the journal Radioengineering and on the board of Czechoslovak section of IEEE. Dr. Cernocky is a member of IEEE and ISCA.
Dr. Cernocky is married and has 2 children. His interests include classical, rock and folklore music (playing clarinet in a folklore group), and mountain hiking.
